RETINAL ARTERIAL BLOOD PRESSURE IN NORMAL KOREAN PEOPLE

Abstract
Since the time when Schulten(1884) measured the blood pressure in the retinal artery in rabbit¢¥s eye, many investigators have reported their results of the determination of the retinal arterial blood pressure, which varied widely regardless of the instruments used(Table 1). Nevertheless, the ophthalmodynamometry has been found to be of value in, diagnosis, treatment of different vascular diseases. In this study, the retinal diastolic blood pressure was measured by Bailliart¢¥s ophthalmodynamometer for 178 eyes of normal korean people. The age ranged. from 24 to 64 years. The age and sex distribution is shown in Table 2.
1. The mean diastolic brachial blood pressure was 79.1 mmHg, the mean diastolic retinal blood pressure 38.1 mmHg, and the mean percent ratio of retinal to brachial diastolic blood pressure 47.7%, when the age factor was not taken into consideration. All these data were listed in Table 3,4 and 5, and their changes by age were illustrated in Fig. 3 and comparison was made with other workers results (Fig.4).
2. There are increases of the mean brachial and retinal diastolic blood pressure, and the mean percent ratio of retinal to brachial blood pressure, as age advances. The changes of the retinal diastolic blood pressure by age run almost parallel with the brachial diastolic blood pressure.
3. The sex factor was of no importance, and no differences were found in these blood. pressure values between males and females.
4. There was definitely a positive correlation of the retinal with the brachial diastolic blood pressure, and the coefficient of correlation was 0.75. The correlation diagram with regression line was illustrated in Fig.5.
5. The factors which influence on the ophthalmodynamometric results were discussed.
